Fan Magazine, published three times a year, is a collection of writings and drawings that celebrate the game of baseball. Each issue includes selected essays, poetry, short fiction and original illustrations. Some issues carry specific themes or reflect a particular season of the year.
In selecting material for Fan, we are drawn to that which reveals something about the contributor's own connection to baseball. We like work that evokes memories, that somehow conveys a personal view of baseball's timeless qualities. We prefer polished material, of course, but sometimes we will work with a rougher piece if it promises a credible story rooted in emotional authenticity.
Some specific requirements:
Prose pieces should contain fewer than 1500 words.
Poetry should be brief; 30 lines is a suggested maximum length.
Very brief musings and untitled poems are collected for Mudville Diary. Each piece contains fewer than 300 words. Many are excerpted from longer submissions.
Artwork should be line art (as opposed to half-tone), one color, and of a size to fit easily within the size of the magazine (5 1/2" x 8 1/2").
All written material should be typed, and all excepting poetry should be double-spaced. Prose pieces should include a word count. All submissions should include a brief biographical note and a self-addressed, stamped envelope. If work is to be returned, the SASE should be provided for that.
As payment, contributors will receive two copies of Fan.
Thanks for you interest in Fan.
